Motor Tour 2012 Wrap-up (in a Few Words and LOTS of Photos)
Our 2012 Motor Tour - The Funk's Grove Midpoint Tour - took place June 8-10, 2012. It began with a fun Friday night kickoff at the Edwardsville Route 66 Festival. A special event took place after dark on Friday night - a thrilling relighting of the neon signs at the Luna Cafe in Mitchell, IL.
The next morning brought a historic crossing of the Chain of Rocks Bridge by a caravan of very excited Motor Tour participants. The tour progressed northward throughout the day with many exciting stops and events in Hamel, Mt Olive, Litchfield, Springfield and Lincoln.
On Saturday evening, a banquet was held at Lincoln College, in Lincoln, IL, honoring this year's inductees into our Hall of Fame. Read all about these Route 66 heroes and all they did to benefit the Mother Road.
The fun continued into Sunday, which brought the highlight of the tour when the State of Illinois' Route 66 Midpoint was officially unveiled at Funk's Grove. There was a ceremony which included Funk's Grove's proprietors, Steve and Glada Funk; a permanent sign marking the midpoint was unveiled as well. The good times continued up into Towanda, Chenoa, Pontiac and Elwood.
The Motor Tour ended with a bang at Lloyd Erickson Park in Elwood with a concert by Jim Hannah and The Country Boys, with Ron Gonsoulin.
Thanks to tireless planning by members of our Association and enthusiastic participation of you dedicated roadies, this, our 23rd annual Motor Tour was a memorable success!
Every traveller along the Mother Road has a unique story to tell. They may see the same sights, but each individual perspective is one-of-a-kind. We were very fortunate this year to receive dozens of photos capturing images taken in during our annual Motor Tour. We're proud to share them with you here. They tell the story of the sights and feelings of a Route 66 adventure in a way that words never could.
