Rolling Out the Red Carpet Corridor 2013

Spring is on the way and with it, the 7th annual Red Carpet Corridor Festival, coming your way May 4 and 5! Get ready for family fun along the “Red Carpet Corridor,” a 90-mile stretch of Route 66 in Illinois from Joliet to Towanda. The participating communities pull out all the stops, offering flea markets, carnivals, live bands, entertainment and special events. The weekend is sure to provide a nostalgic and authentic Route 66 experience as you explore these communities and attractions that are the heart and soul of the Mother Road.

New Thrift Store Opens in Braidwood

Our thanks to Karen Thacker for providing the following information for us to share:

Karen's Resale Shop, a new thrift store, has opened in Braidwood at 195 Route 66!

What are you looking for? Antiques? Current? Clothes? Furniture? Man Cave Items? We have it ALL!!

We are taking over the old Garden Gate building across from Polka Dot Diner on historic
Route 66.

Hours of operation will be Monday - Saturday 10:00 AM -5:00 PM; closed on Sundays.

Kids are welcome as we have a kids section for them to be "creative" while the adults look around. Have a dog you bring with you everywhere? You are welcome to
bring them along as well.

Come check us out! New items daily and feel free to drop off donations as well.

Blazin' the Trail for Children" Wilderness Run

The 3rd annual "Blazin' the Trail for Children" Wilderness Run, to benefit the Livingston County Children's Advocacy Center.

The run is Saturday, June 22 at 10:00 AM at Humiston Woods Nature Center in Pontiac, IL. The course is based on a 5K route set in a hardwood forest and prairie area that partially follows a river bed and banks. The course includes nature made obstacles such as hills, trees, rocks, and small ravines.

Registration and check in starts at 9:00am.

Registration is $20.00, and $15.00 for students elementary through high school. Registration forms are available at

Doyle to Talk of Railroads - Journey Stories Series

Dr. Rob Doyle, a former educator at Eastern Illinois University, will present a discussion of railroads and railroad history at the monthly meeting of the Livingston County Historical Society, Thursday, February 28th at 7:30 PM in City Council Chambers, 115 West Howard Street, Pontiac, IL.

Dr. Doyle taught at Eastern Illinois University for 29 years in the Physical Education Department and served as an Athletic Trainer. He is a board Member Wabash Valley Railroaders Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana, a Past President and Museum Director for the Coles County Historical Society, and a Board Member for the Monticello Railroad Museum. Doyle owns a restored Illinois Central Caboose (number 9570) which is currently on display at the Monticello Railroad Museum in Monticello, Illinois.

Local Support Brings Smithsonian Exhibit to Pontiac

The Smithsonian Institution’s traveling Journey Stories exhibit opens here on Saturday, February 23. The exhibit is sponsored in Illinois by the Illinois Humanities Council, and locally by a group of philanthropically-minded individuals and businesses. The City of Pontiac, which has served as the organizing force for the exhibit, has recently announced the names of the local contributors and supporters who have made the coming of the Journey Stories exhibit possible.
